Peter Choharis
Peter Choharis is the founder of The Choharis Law Group, PLLC. He has nearly thirty years of experience appearing in trial and appellate courts throughout the United States. Peter also has substantial dispute resolution and foreign direct investment experience in Asia and Africa, where he has lived and worked, and in Europe on E.U. and international law matters.
Domestically, his U.S. litigation experience includes a wide range of commercial disputes, administrative proceedings, and challenges to U.S. government action. Internationally, Peter’s experience includes disputes in Asia, Africa, Europe, and Central America. He has represented or advised U.S. entities on a host of international commercial matters throughout the foreign investment cycle, from feasibility studies to financing, negotiations, compliance, and dispute resolution. This experience also includes regulatory investigations and criminal matters overseas. He has also worked with minister and senior government officials in Asia, Africa, and Europe on commercial and public international law matters, including before U.S. courts and international arbitral tribunals.
Based on his international development and finance experience, Peter was selected to be the only practicing attorney on the U.S. government’s Millennium Challenge Corporation Advisory Council. The U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (formerly the Overseas Private Investment Corporation) has also selected his firm to provide legal services for both insurance disputes and transactions. Peter’s business experience includes serving as outside general counsel or strategic advisor to startups. He also counsels U.S. companies on a range of foreign investment compliance issues, including anti-money laundering, whistleblower compliance, and FCPA.
Peter is a recognized expert on international law and foreign affairs. He has lectured at several law schools and international organizations and has appeared on CNN-Headline News, BBC, CNBC, Bloomberg TV, CNN-International, MSNBC, REUTERS-TV, and National Public Radio to discuss law and foreign policy.
Peter is a member of the Board of Freedom Now, a nonprofit that helps free prisoners who have been unlawfully detained. He has also been a member of several think tanks; has published dozens of articles on foreign affairs and international law in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, International Herald Tribune, Forbes, The Atlantic, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, and The Boston Globe; and has written several scholarly articles for law journals. He has been an adjunct faculty member at American University and Yale College and a Visiting Scholar at the G.W. University School of Law.
